Many new entrants are going to try their luck at Bollywood this year.Most of them have familiar surnames. Sikander Kher is one of them. He has the privilege to call Kirron and Anupam Kher, mom and dad. Debuting with two films this year: Summer 2007 and Woodstock Villa, Sikander sounds very politically correct on the phone, careful not to say anything remotely controversial or newsy! He says he debuts with playing two very different characters and in two dissimilar genres: “Woodstock Villa is a thriller and I play the character of this guy whose weakness is quick money and women.He gets into this sticky situation and has to figure out a way to get out of it. In Summer 2007, I play a medical student.” What about his look, that very rugged appearance teamed with long hair. “I have always had long hair but I do as my director tells me. If he wants me to cut them short, I will do that as well,” he says, trying to sound very sincere. Not that we are saying, he isn’t! We ask him about the actors who he looks up to and Sikander would like us to believe that, “I like everyone. Everyone who’s successful has done work to be where they are. For me, the director is of immense importance. However, I am in awe of Amitabh Bachchan and Dilip Kumar.” What about his contemporaries, actors and actresses debuting with him? “I have not thought about these things. I mean, I know that this year has a lot of kids from Bollywood families making their debut but beyond that I haven’t bothered to find out,” says Sikander. He admits that the advantage for him was that directors readily gave him their time if he sought an appointment. “Because of my parents, I didn’t have to face doors slamming in my face. However apart from that, it will be my work that will do the talking,” says Sikander. Didn’t he want a big banner debut, ala Deepika Padukone? “Who doesn’t? But I am happy with what I have got,” says Sikander, with no visible sign of disappointment over not having made a debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali as it was rumoured to.And what does Sikander do when he’s not busy with his career? “I am a cinema freak. I watch a movie every Friday at a theatre and during the week at home. I also play sports. Squash basket ball, golf, cricket, snooker, bowling,” answers Sikander.In the middle of all this, when does he find time for Gul Panag. Weren’t they supposed to be dating? “Neither Gul or I have ever accepted or denied that. I am dating my work at the moment,” says Sikander.And before we sign off, Sikander says, “Please make the interview sound good. I am new and I need your support.” Sure Sikander, but could you be a little less politically correct the next time?
