Brazil launches sustainable development plan for Amazon

Deutsche Welle: The Brazilian government has introduced a plan to sustainably develop the Amazon rain forest. Environment Minister Marina Silva said the sustainable development plan includes easy-term credit for reforestation and emergency measures to combat illegal logging. The government hopes the plan will affirm its sovereignty over the 4.2 million square kilometer wilderness. Scientists estimate about 20 percent of the original forest cover has been cut down to promote development. Read »
