Pak tribal badlands in flare-up mode, no quick fix solutions, says army spokesman

Violence has kicked-up again in Pakistan’s volatile Swat region, and the Pakistan military says that there are no quick fix solutions to the problem.

Nearly 60 people have been killed, including 13 civilians in the last two days, and there is an American concern that the Pakistan government’s choice to talk with tribal elders to use their influence with militants is not working.

Top American military officials believe that the talks have given the Taliban more room to grow and allow safe havens for Al Qaeda leaders hiding out in the remote region to remain.

Fox News quoted army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas, as saying: “There are no quick fixes to this problem, we have to go for solutions which are home grown.”

In the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), militants are continuing to cross over into Afghanistan to attack U.S.-led coalition forces and their Afghan counterparts.

Afghan and NATO officials say the attacks are up 40 percent this year. (ANI)
