In pursuant of their demand for separate statehood, leaders of the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) had recently launched a two day cease-work strike in all Central and State government offices in the Darjeeling hill region from 12 February. Nearly 60 activists of GJM have been on hunger strike over nearly a week demanding scrapping of plans to grant Sixth Schedule status to the region and called for the removal of Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) chief Subash Ghisingh from the post of administrator of the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC).
